rabbit

In the meadow
at the edge
of the wood
a rabbit lies
bleeding.
Entrails devoured
by a predator.

Everything has to eat.
At the final moment
the little animal’s cries
resound across the meadow.
Worms and insects
collect their plenty.

The moon’s
unnatural light
drapes the meadow
beside the trees.
Where are the rabbits?
They have retreated
into their burrows.
They are making love.
Soon more rabbits will come.
In the distance a wolf
howls.
Tomorrow the rabbits will
come out of the ground.
