Poem: leaving behind a dead flower

By: Linda M Crate

deadflower

you can lead a horse to water,
but you can’t force them
to drink;
similarly you can harass
my mother,
but you cannot force me to
speak—
we are not friends
nor will we be again
i have forgiven
you,
but i refuse to be hurt by you again;
used by you, or manipulated
by you—
never has goodbye tasted so good to my
lips as it does now
i hope you find peace but this is where i need
to be
in this spiral staircase far from you
and your negativity
i was always a child of the light and you one
of the darkness,
but our shadows can no longer dance;
there are too many dead
flowers in this garden—
i am meant to
grow.
