‘Ephemeral Blessings’ and other poems

Ephemeral Blessings

Dusk, and on the sand we stand quite far apart.
Beyond, the sea unfurls towards us, wave after wave.

I’m a hundred steps behind you
as you likewise face the drowning sun.
You, ankle-deep in saline water, wind-blown hair
a flag of frantic arms reaching out to me.

Above, the clouds are scattered fluffs of cotton nearing,
gathering, but still only passing by
as my broken sky-high ceiling.

Mineward: everything that will never be mine
completely.

ambivalent

as the scattered lights emanating from the houses strewn
along the distant harbor blinking hello or goodbye
while I lean on the handrail and stare
from the stoic ship’s fore as it hums
towards imminent shore
