Poem: happenstance
By: Millt Montague
once their mothers hope
and joy
their fathers dream of the future
now a grandchild’s faint memory
soon a two line bio on a
gravestone
two old men cherish a
memory
of a short togetherness
a moment of sanity
in the maelstrom of war’s
insanity
joined by army
happenstance
two lonely souls met
under thundering war clouds
similar background and morality
they bonded
together only briefly then
separated
for almost 70 years
reunited at last
by long distance telephone
happenstance ??
joined together once more
forever
entombed in the same ground
though a thousand miles apart
two old buddies at rest
in perpetuity
