‘Inheritance’ by Balli Kaur Jaswal
Indians living abroad have always given the world great novels. But most of them either belong to the US, the UK, Europe or Australia. We never heard the Indian diaspora living in Singapore scripting a great fictional work. Perhaps the wait is over. We have a new voice called Balli Kaur Jaswal who has just published her long-gestated novel Inheritance. Jaswal documents the evolution of Singapore post its separation from Malaysia through the eyes of a Sikh family.
In the forefront of the novel Inheritance is the story of a Sikh family, which is originally from Punjab. The novel documents the struggle of the family and retells the story of the Island country. Inheritance is Jaswal’s debut novel but is an impressive display of her imagination and great story-telling skills. .
