There Once

By: Alan Berger

There once
Was a boy we created
We fed bathed and serenaded

There once
Was a love
That grew like a flower
Like a gift from
A higher power
Sustained with tears
Like a warm lovely summer shower

Then the boy grows
Go out with friends
Never the same again

This nice couple
Had this girl
Young and fair
It all began and ended right there

Sometimes our plans
Don’t remain on their stands

The blueprint belonging to the past and the future
Belonging to our extended family of man
Takes turns and twists we don’t understand

After being hit in the face with a strap
You eventually find it soothing
To adapt
