Ode to Trees

By: Leigh-Anne Burley

We climb trees methodically
immerse ourselves in green
pick fruit and nuts
use the trunk’s shady backrest
to think and dream.

Trees are planners and
forward thinkers
invest in roots and stalks
guardians of vistas and visions

Trees are settlers and
sky watchers
scatter seeds
harvest crops
weather storms.

Trees are heavy lifters
supporting banks and cliffs
thwarting mudslides and
tumbling boulders
