train

Past neon lit stations and empty platforms
A union of metal, concrete and gravel
It slithers through hinterlands waste and fertile
At first barren and desolate, tracks lined by thorny sentinels
Then lush verdant fields in green and gold,
Sunflowers turning their heads to the light
And paddy in water, green on grey

As dusk creeps in, Stygian and sable
An occasional village, a blip of light against dark
Like a giant glow worm lit within
Cocooned in metal
Travellers stare at their ghostly reflections
Accompanying them in a parallel universe
A womb within a world or a world within a womb

  1. Hi Priya Anand, I enjoyed your poem wholeheartedly “The Train”. It’s simple fabulous. What amazed me the most is the metaphor which you have made with the village. Your lines like – “An occasional village, a blip of light against dark/Like a giant glow worm lit within/Cocooned in metal” and “A womb within a world or a world within a womb” are so powerful to compel the readers to think more than twice. Thanks for such a nice poem.
