‘Echoing Water’ and other poems

By: Kathryn Holeton

Echoing Water

Frogs croaking away,
A cacophony of gold,
Echoing water.

Waving

Singing cattails stand,
their roots entrenched in thick mud-
waving in water.

Natural Spotlight

Sunlight beaming down,
down on common people-
natural spotlight.

River Under a Red Sun

A sea of brown twigs waving in the wind.
A river under a red sun
with water filled with a thick rainbow,
running parallel to an industrial world.

Seeds cannot grow here,
there is nothing left to raise them.
When the trees have fallen
rivers run with poison
and wildlife has burned away-

Only then will we learn
we cannot survive on industry.

My Mockingbird

There’s a green tree next to me.
A confession on my lips.
Nothing will hear or see me
or the green falling leaves.

There’s a familiar smell in the air.
Its bittersweet, with a twist.
It comes and goes like a phantom rain,
remaining in my memory.

A mockingbird lands in the tree,
hopping between the leaves.
It looks down, staring at the field.
I tell the bird my confession,
grateful to get it off my chest
with someone who will keep my secret,
and not tell a soul.
